The Sunken Grotto is one of only two named locations in the official description of Prehistoric Farm — the other being Dr. Ivy’s DNA Lab — and that alone tells you it matters. The developer picked it out by name in a few dozen words of copy.
What it is, in confirmed terms
The grotto contains sea-reptile eggs. That single fact does more work than it looks like it does, because it breaks the main loop’s monopoly.
Everywhere else in the game, an egg is manufactured: you dig fossils, you assemble a complete set, the DNA Lab grows the set into an egg. In the grotto, you find the egg. There is no fossil set in front of it and no lab step. The gate is getting there at all, which means diving, which means boats.
It also establishes that the roster is not limited to land animals. Sea reptiles are a distinct category from the dinosaurs the farm loop produces, and they arrive by a distinct route.
Why it changes your priorities
If you are deciding between another shovel upgrade and whatever extends your reach underwater, the grotto is the argument for reach. A tool upgrade makes the sets you already farm close slightly faster. Access to the grotto adds a category of creature you otherwise cannot obtain at all.
That is a structural argument, not a measured one — we have no costs on either side of the comparison, and we are not going to invent them to make the advice sound sharper.
The one practical note we can give: the grotto sits in the same water as the Mosasaurus, which the description presents as a group fight. Scout before you farm, and prefer company on your first trip down.
To be announced
Where the grotto is, how deep it is, what unlocks it, how many eggs it holds, whether they respawn, which sea reptiles come out of them, whether they take longer to incubate, and whether the Mosasaurus is encountered on the way. The description names the place and its contents and stops there, so this page does too.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is in the Sunken Grotto?
Sea-reptile eggs, according to the official experience description. It is the only location the developer names as an egg source outside Dr. Ivy's DNA Lab.
How do I get to the Sunken Grotto?
Through the diving side of the game, which the description groups with bigger boats and new fossil islands as exploration content. No route, depth or unlock requirement has been published.
Do grotto eggs hatch differently?
Unknown. Eggs in general are warmed in an incubator until they hatch; nothing official distinguishes grotto eggs from lab eggs in that step.
