Growth stages and the belly meter

Over half full, or growth stops.

Once an egg hatches, Prehistoric Farm switches genre on you. Up to that point it is an exploration and gathering game; afterwards it is animal husbandry with a meter you have to keep topped up.

The one rule the developer stated

From the official description: keep a dinosaur’s belly more than half full and it keeps growing, from Newborns up to Elders. That is a conditional, not a timer — the stated driver of growth is the feeding state, not elapsed time alone.

Read carefully, that sentence implies three things worth acting on:

  • Half is a threshold, not a target. The requirement is “over half”, which means there is a band between comfortable and stalled. Topping up to full buys you slack before you next have to think about it.
  • Neglect costs progress, not necessarily health. The stated consequence of letting the belly fall is that growth stops. The description does not say a dinosaur can be lost, and we are not going to imply that it can.
  • Growth is attended, not idle. Unlike incubation, this part of the loop asks for your presence. A dinosaur does not grow itself while you are off on a boat if nothing is keeping it fed.
  1. Confirmed

    Newborn

The stage a dinosaur hatches into, named directly in the official description.

  2. Unpublished

    Intermediate stages

The description implies a progression between the two named endpoints but does not name or count the stages in it.

  3. Confirmed

    Elder

The far end of the growth track, also named directly. Grown dinosaurs can be ridden.

A feeding routine that works under uncertainty

You can run a sensible routine without knowing the numbers, because the shape of the problem is clear even when the rates are not.

Feed before you leave, not when you return. The belly falling below half costs you growth time you cannot recover, so the cheap insurance is topping up immediately before any long trip — a dig run, a fishing session, a dive into the Sunken Grotto.

Keep your herd small while you are learning. Every additional dinosaur is another meter to watch, and the penalty for spreading yourself thin is that nothing reaches Elder. One dinosaur growing steadily beats four stalled at Newborn.

And measure your own drain rate once. Note the belly level, play for a known number of minutes without feeding, and note it again. That single observation tells you how often you need to come back, which is more useful than any number we could print.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my dinosaur's belly drops below half?

The official description ties continued growth to keeping the belly over half full, so growth is what you lose. Whether there is any further penalty below that threshold is not stated.

How many growth stages are there?

To be announced. The description names the endpoints — Newborns and Elders — but not the stages in between or how many there are.

How long does a dinosaur take to reach Elder?

Unpublished. No growth timer exists in any primary source, and it may depend on species or on how consistently you feed.
