Digging

Fossil islands and bigger boats

The exploration axis of a farming game.

Prehistoric Farm is a farming game with an exploration axis bolted onto it, and the exploration is where the game stops being a loop in one place. The official description frames it simply: as you explore, you get bigger boats and new fossil islands, along with fishing and diving.

What “bigger boats, new islands” implies

Four things follow from that phrasing, and they are worth acting on even without numbers.

Progression is gated by reach, not just by rate. You do not simply dig the same spot faster forever. At some point the thing standing between you and a fossil set is a boat you do not own yet.

Boats are an investment in future sets. If different islands yield different fossils — a reasonable reading of “new fossil islands”, though not an explicit statement — then a boat is what unblocks a set you cannot currently close. That makes it compete directly with shovel upgrades for your currency.

The map grows with the water. Fishing, diving and the Sunken Grotto are all listed in the same breath as boats. Exploration here is one system, not three separate side activities.

The endgame is out there, not at home. The Mosasaurus fight happens in the water, which means the boat line eventually leads somewhere that is not a farm chore.

Playing it without a map

Your first visit to any new island should be a survey, not a farming run. Walk it, note what the dig spots look like, and see whether the fossils are different from your home island before you commit a session to it. A bad farming run on a new island teaches you more than a good one on an old one.

Keep one island as your reliable fallback. When you are two pieces from closing a set, certainty beats variety — go back to the place where you know what comes out of the ground.

What is not published

The number of islands, their names, their unlock costs, which fossils each one yields, boat prices, boat capacities and travel times. None of it is on the experience page, and all of it is the kind of detail that would make a genuinely useful map page. When it exists, this page gains that map. It will not get one built from guesswork in the meantime.
